HOW TO BUILD AND SUSTAIN CREATIVE IDEAS.

A lot of times I have seen young people complain of being out of ideas, thinking there’s nothing new they can come up with, or say someone else is already doing better at an idea that come across their minds already. Truth is there will always be an excuse till you actually decide to ignore and make a first step. There are always new grounds to be discovered even in existing fields. What matters the more is your passion for something you want to work with. We have all had excuses not to do something we currently are doing but the choice to ignore those excuses, take the risk and plunge right in or work on those excuses is what separates the thinkers from the doers.

When an idea pops up in your mind, chances are it has and is also popping up in lots of other minds all over the world and will probably keep popping up in more people’s minds by the minute. Some of whom may be in a better position and with available resources to execute the idea as soon as possible. So sometimes when I hear people say someone stole or borrowed my idea I wonder, what if this person had thought of it before you and was unable to work with it at the time, or even started working on it but then got stuck at a point or probably the idea dropped in their minds at about the same time it dropped in yours. Truth is fact that someone executed an idea before you shouldn’t be a milestone to judge your ability, your chances of also succeeding or give up totally. You can still excel with that same idea if you also have a great plan for it, I have seen cases of people who started off great looking concepts and later dropped them probably because they got something better or for other ideas they were more comfortable with, now imagine you gave up on an idea simply because you see someone else working with the same idea only to find out the person has abandoned the previous idea and switched on to something else in say a year or even ten.

Not that all ideas are guaranteed to be a hit, there will always be challenges but if you are willing you will learn and only get better, there will also be failures and mistakes. But then trying and failing is normal for most start-ups and you haven’t failed until you decide to stop trying. This is something we are hardly taught in school, if you really want to be an entrepreneur or build a brand, do not wait to start even with whatever is at your disposal, chances are you still have a lot to learn also no one ever really gets to know it all. So the earlier you start the better giving yourself ample time to grow into the whole process. With time only the really passionate one will remain standing and probably reap the full benefits as a lot will fizzle out or switch paths along the way.

Also having a mentor is important as it helps to set a picture of what you intend to become as well as possible steps to take, if you want to follow in your mentors footsteps, however you can also create your own way. I do hear people at times getting the mentorship deal wrong by expecting their mentors to be their personal coach. Honestly not all mentors can reach out to their intending mentees and that’s fine, they probably have a lot on their plates too. Notwithstanding you will find a way especially in this internet age where you can read up virtually everything you need to know online, also if you’re unable to get the attention of your ideal mentors you can seek mentorship from other people who probably may not yet be as big but are willing and able to work with you to at least start off. Besides you may be put off by some of your mentors once you really get to know them as some of their views may be totally different from what you may have expected especially on certain issues which may be sensitive to you, so whatever you can learn from a distance, start with that.

And if unfortunately you are getting tired of trying over and over, its fine to take a break, cool off, try something different, do some more research or come up with a better plan.  Sometimes not all ideas are seen through but the experience and story will be worth it and may be all someone else may need to kick off. Personally I always advice to have backup plans or at least a couple of backup ideas you can always build on or probably execute alongside one another. This is one of the reasons why it is important to keep a good record of ideas that come up in your mind and if possible have a ready-made step by step guide you feel can be used to execute those ideas drafted down somewhere even if you are not working on them yet, you may get the chance or see the need to give them a shot in the future.
